About this practice

Soften is a gentle guided practice designed to help release physical tension and create more space in both the body and mind.

When stress, anxiety, overwhelm, or emotional pressure build up, the body often responds by tightening. The shoulders rise, the jaw clenches, the chest feels restricted, and the nervous system remains on alert.

This practice invites you to notice where tension is being held and gently soften around it. Rather than forcing relaxation, you learn to meet your experience with curiosity, patience, and ease.

Many people find Soften helpful during stressful days, periods of anxiety, emotional exhaustion, or whenever they feel physically tense and unable to fully relax.

How to practice

  1. Settle into a comfortable position and take a slow breath to arrive.
  2. Gently scan through the body and notice where tension is being held.
  3. As you breathe out, invite a little softening around that area, without forcing it.
  4. If a place won't release, start smaller, such as the space between your eyebrows, and let one small release be enough.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I feel emotional when I relax?
Tension is often holding emotion in place. When the body softens, what it was bracing against can finally move. Let it — it usually passes more quickly than we expect.
My shoulders won't drop — what then?
Then start smaller — just the space between your eyebrows, or your tongue resting away from the roof of your mouth. One small release is the whole practice.
What is this practice designed to help with?
Soften is designed to help release physical tension, reduce stress, and create a greater sense of ease in the body and mind.
Can anxiety cause physical tension?
Yes. Anxiety often shows up physically through tight shoulders, jaw tension, chest tightness, muscle stiffness, and a general feeling of being unable to relax.
Do I need to be good at meditation?
Not at all. This practice is suitable for beginners and experienced meditators alike. The focus is simply on noticing and gently softening tension where it appears.
When should I use this practice?
Many people use Soften after stressful days, during periods of overwhelm, before sleep, or anytime they notice physical tension building up in the body.
What if I still feel tense afterwards?
That is completely okay. The goal is not to force relaxation. Even small moments of awareness and softening can help support nervous system recovery over time.
Can I use this practice every day?
Yes. Regular practice can help you become more aware of stress patterns in the body and develop a greater sense of calm, flexibility, and emotional balance.
